About RTTTL2MEL Converter

RTTL2MelConverter is a program used to convert ringtones in RTTTL or RTX format to Ericsson’s Melody Composer format (also called Extended EMelody.) Once converted to Melody Composer format, the ringing tone can be placed on a WAP-server and downloaded via WAP.

Note that the Melody Composer format is a format which has limitations compared to the RTTTL/RTX-format, as it only has notes with 4 different durations. To overcome that limitation RTTL2MelConverter will use this method when converting:

Note duration

Substitution

1/32

Not supported, but may be substituted with a 1/16 note (The program will ask if it’s OK)

Dotted 1/32

Not supported, but may be substituted with a dotted 1/16 note (The program will ask if it’s OK)

1/16

A 150ms long note, the shortest note directly supported by the Melody Composer format.

Dotted 1/16

A 225ms long note, the 2:nd shortest note directly supported by the Melody Composer format.

1/8

A 300ms long note, the 2:nd longest note directly supported by the Melody Composer format.

Dotted 1/8

A 450ms long note, the longest note directly supported by the Melody Composer format.

1/4

Played as 2 separate 1/8 notes.

Dotted 1/4

Played as 2 separate dotted 1/8 notes.

1/2

Played as 3 separate notes consisting of 2 dotted 1/8 notes and 1 1/8 note.

Dotted 1/2

Played as 4 separate notes consisting of 4 dotted 1/8 notes.

1/1

Played as 6 separate notes consisting of 5 dotted 1/8 notes and 1 1/16 note.

Dotted 1/1

Played as 8 separate notes consisting of 8 dotted 1/8 notes.

Using this method to convert the melodies will make the melodies sound almost like RTTTL melodies, at least according to my ears ;-) The disadvantage is that it allows shorter melodies as the longer notes will require several shorter notes concatenated.

Also, the Melody Composer format doesn’t support variable beat rate. This means that the melodies will play at approx. 100 beats per minute regardless of the setting in the RTTTL-RTX file, unless either of the “Half speed” or “Double speed” checkboxes are checked. In that case the beat rate will be 50 or 200 beats per minute respectively.

Reinstalling

The installation creates at least 3 shortcuts in a folder called “Jan-Soft” which can be found by selecting: “Start->Programs->Jan-Soft”. “RTTL2MelConverter” starts the program, “RTTL2MelConverter User's Manual” opens a User Manual in HTML format, and “RTTL2MelConverter Home-Page” is a link to the author’s homepage where information about the program can be found.

Converting a ringing tone

Start with opening a ringing tone in RTTTL/RTX format. Do that by either entering a filename (optionally with a path) in the “RTTTL/RTX file to convert:” edit box, or by using a standard file browse dialog available by clicking the  button to the right of the edit box.

The program will check if the selected file is a valid RTTTL/RTX file and issue an error message if the file format is unknown.

Before converting the ringing tone it is possible to pre-listen to the ringing tone both as it sounds played in the RTTTL/RTX format, and played in the Melody Composer format. Simply click either “Prelisten RTTTL” or “Prelisten MEL” to start play.  Check “Half speed” to play and/or convert using half speed. Check “Double speed” to play and/or convert using double speed.

To actually convert the ringing tone either enter a path (not including a filename!) in the “Folder to create MEL-file in:” edit box, or click the  button to the right of the edit box. As soon as a valid path is selected the “Convert” button will be enabled, just click it to convert. That will create a file with the same name as the RTTTL/RTX-file, but with “.mel” as extension, in the selected folder Before creating the file the program will check if there already is a file with the same name, and if there is it will ask if it is OK to replace it.

Done!
